Looking back, I was absolutely terrified that nobody would come to our first event…
I think every first-time event host probably has that fear.
I knew the VISION of what I wanted Funnel Hacking LIVE to be…
I knew we could change a ton of lives if I could just get people in the seats...
And that first year, we sold 638 tickets (which seems so small now, but we were sooo excited at the time!)
Yet for some reason, when the day came, I was still so worried that nobody would actually come to the event.
And what if they did come?
These people had invested their hard-earned money (and sacrificed time away from their family) to fly to Las Vegas, and spend 3 days learning how to improve their business…
I didn’t want it to be like many of the other stuffy conferences or internet marketing events that I had been to. (those were boring, and I didn’t want it to be a snooze-fest).
I didn’t want everyone gathering in the hallways to network while the sessions were happening.
I wanted people in their seat, losing track of time because they were so focused on soaking up all of the information.
So I brought in Devon Brown, a high-energy emcee who I’d seen at a previous event that I loved.
I hired him to help bring that same special energy and buzz I felt when I saw him on stage at an event.
Then the day of the event finally came…
And as I walked down from my hotel room to the conference area, I could hear the music PUMPING…
And the closer I got, my heart started beating faster…
I couldn’t figure out if I was more nervous, or just really excited that this was finally happening!
I could feel the almost electric ENERGY of the crowd before I even arrived at the event room!
And that’s the moment I KNEW that we had created something very special (and dare I say magical…)
We had 90 active affiliates that we wrote a check to each month, and we were looking to grow that number.
So at our first FHL, we asked the audience “What’s YOUR Dream Car?”
This question was the backbone of our big launch for the event, the Dream Car Affiliate Contest.
We had to find a venue with LOTS of space, because we brought in two cars INSIDE to showcase…
The first was my personal Dream Car - a “ClickFunnels blue” Corvette that I leased, which I ended up driving for YEARS!
And, we gave away a “ClickFunnels red” Ferrari to Jeff Walker, who was the TOP affiliate for the DotCom Secrets book affiliate contest!
We also wanted to reward our TOP affiliates who had been working so hard to draw in new ClickFunnels users…
So we invited 15 or 20 affiliates who were at the TOP of the leaderboard to a day of FUN and adventure! We all met up at Jimmy Buffet’s Margaritaville for dinner, and then took everyone to the race track to play with all sorts of exotic luxury cars (in honor of our Dream Car launch)...
I knew that I wanted our attendees to be able to sit down with entrepreneurs who were having huge success with their funnels, so they could learn from them…
There is POWER in proximity, right?
I wanted to have giant tables where entrepreneurs at ALL stages of their journey could hang out and ask their burning questions to people who have been in their shoes…
So we created the “RoundTable Event”... and started with about 15 Round Tables (It’s crazy to see how much this event has grown since then!)
And I even hosted a table as well!
At night, Funnel Hackers gathered in the hallways and camped out on the floor into the wee hours of the morning to immediately apply what they had just learned. The goal was to get their funnel BUILT (even if it was imperfect), so they had something to launch, and data they could work with.
When we started Funnel Hacking LIVE, I knew that I wanted to directly SHOW the impact they can create as entrepreneurs.
I wanted each person to see that the bigger their business grows, the more CHANGE they can create in their own special way.
So I invited Stu McLaren of World Teacher Aid to the event, and presented him with a giant $12,500 check to help his organization build schools in African villages!
It was such a powerful moment for both Stu AND everyone at the event, that we’ve invited Stu back to every Funnel Hacking LIVE since…
Towards the end of the event we launched the CF Certified program.
Funnel Hackers had the chance to invest in an in-depth $10K funnel-building curriculum that positioned them as a ‘ClickFunnels Certified Partner’, who were trained personally by our CF funnel-building team.
We were just coming off of a GREAT year of FHL in Las Vegas, and we felt great about what we had accomplished!
But we also knew that we wanted to GROW Funnel Hacking LIVE in 2016…
So we took a giant leap of faith, and searched for a venue in San Diego that had a lot more event space.
We found a perfect venue that was on the marina away from a lot of distraction, where entrepreneurs could come and focus on their business for 3 solid days…
So we booked it! And then came the terrifying task of trying to fill all those seats…
And what if they did come?
We made a lofty goal of selling 1,000 FHL tickets (almost double from 2015!)...
So with our goal ahead of us, the biggest concern (again) was...
Could we actually pull it off in time for the event?
Could we sell 1,000 tickets? And if so, would these registrants actually show up?
Even with a year of experience under our belts, that nervous feeling never really left me…
But the moment I stepped out on stage to a roaring room that was filled with Funnel Hackers, I knew we had made the right decision…

When Marcus Lemonis took the stage at FHL in San Diego, I was sooo excited!
And the closer I got, my heart started beating faster…
His hit TV show, Season 3 of “The Profit” was airing at the time of our event, and Marcus had become a household name…
His whole show was built around the idea of helping entrepreneurs with their businesses, so I knew I really wanted him to speak at our event…
I had no idea that his speaking fees would cost more than I had originally budgeted for the entire event!
So that was a little scary for us as we were planning, but we found a way to make it happen!
Not only did he speak in San Diego at the event, but he also sat down with the CF partners to talk about the growth of ClickFunnels. The time he took with us to dig into ClickFunnels was so special, and so meaningful…
It was the start of a GREAT relationship between us…
And then one day, I received a phone call from Marcus. He invited me to be a part of one of his episodes on The Profit, where we got to help create a funnel for an entrepreneur, and get ClickFunnels (and our message) in front of MILLIONS of people.
Just like the year before, we had planned on selling our CF Certified program at FHL 2016.
Entrepreneurs could sign-up for the program, take the lengthy funnel-building course, and become a certified ClickFunnels partner.
But we wanted to set up the offer a bit differently than we did in 2015…
I had seen a crazy selling technique where you make your pitch, and then send EVERYONE out of the room on break…
And then you re-open the doors after the break for a private session only for those who had filled out the application and wanted IN…
Talk about a gutsy, terrifying strategy!
We talked about it, and decided to give the “closed door” strategy a try…
It was a HUGE risk that we were taking. This was our big offer, so it needed to go off without a hitch…
Sure, the curiosity and FOMO (fear of missing out) behind the exclusivity of the private session was amazing…
But we knew that would already have a captive audience sitting right in the room… and we were going to send them all away?!?
I couldn’t help but wonder,
What if they didn’t come back?
What if we opened the doors back up, and nobody was there?
The closer we came to the moment where I was to deliver the pitch, I was scared that I had completely lost my mind…
But by that point, we were committed to a plan, and there was no turning back!
So, I delivered my offer...And we sent everyone out of the room on break.
I was just hoping that there would be someone on the other side of the set of doors when we opened them back up…
Luckily, we did it RIGHT! The doors opened, and we had around 120 people that signed up for our CF Certified Program that year!
This time at FHL, we presented Stu McLaren with TWO checks for his organization that builds schoolhouses for African children...
I wanted to make it EASY for ClickFunnels users to give back and help change lives.
So we came up with a really cool idea…
Every time a funnel was built inside ClickFunnels throughout the year, we donated $1 to World Teacher Aid...
We put together an amazing offer that our attendees would really want…
Any Funnel Hacker attendee who donated $500 to World Teacher Aid during the FHL event would receive the 2016 recordings for FREE!
In just 3 days during the event, our FHL community raised a total of $78,476!
Check #1 - In 2016, we gave World Teacher Aid a giant check for all the funnels that were built inside of ClickFunnels that year!
Check #2 - We also raised donations for World Teacher Aid during the event!
at the Dallas FHL event! It was a huge growth year, with 1,436 FHL tickets sold! (That’s about 400 more entrepreneurs attending the event than the year before!)
I had used the term “One Funnel Away” here and there before, but the Dallas event is where that phrase really became solidified as one of our main taglines.
Because I loved it so much, and because it embodied the message that I wanted everyone to understand, I decided to use “One Funnel Away” as the theme for FHL 2017.
I just really wanted everyone to have the unwavering belief that, no matter where they were in their business, they were just one funnel away from creating CHANGE in their life…
Every entrepreneur in that room was on the cusp of something greater…
Maybe they were one funnel away from firing their boss and leaving their j-o-b…
Maybe they were one funnel away from finally getting their business idea to “work”...
Maybe they were one funnel away from scaling their business, and getting their Two Comma Club or 8-Figure award...
The point is, everyone in that room in Dallas knew that just ONE great funnel could be a life-changer for them (and for the people they served).
Since then, “One Funnel Away” has been an overarching theme of ours, not just for the following FHL events, but in our daily messaging to all entrepreneurs and our ClickFunnels audience.
We had several offers that we had planned throughout the event…
One of them was a really cool new offer called “Fill Your Funnel”...
It was a special training that showed entrepreneurs how to leverage the different social platforms to send consistent traffic straight into their funnels.
And the “Fill Your Funnel” offer did ok…
But there was a huge ‘missing piece’ of the marketing puzzle that our ClickFunnels users desperately needed even more…
See, the ClickFunnels editor gave them all the tools they needed to build and create their funnels…
But they still had to connect it with a 3rd party email autoresponder if they wanted to follow-up with their audience. (And often, those outside systems didn’t really do everything our users wanted it to do…)
So our development team worked for a long time to create something of our own...
And we were finally ready to launch it in Dallas…
We were all soooo excited! It became clear that the show-stealing offer of the entire event was the opportunity to go “All In”, and upgrade to Actionetics, our system that helps you easily create email follow-up campaigns.
I had been a fan of Tony for forever…
About 10 years prior to this event, I actually had the chance to privately meet up with him at an Unleash The Power Within (UPW) event.
After that, he invited me to speak in Fiji, and I was a part of his new Money Masters DVD…
When we started doing FHL events, I knew that I wanted him to come speak…
But I was also nervous because I knew he doesn’t exactly speak everywhere…
That, and I didn’t even want to think about the hefty speaking fee that he no doubt had…
But I always dreamed that one day when FHL had grown large enough and reached our pinnacle, that we could invite Tony to speak…
So in 2017, we had almost 1,500 registrants, and in my head I figured that was the biggest this event could possibly get… (I had no idea at the time that we’d be DOUBLING our number seats at the next event!)
So I made the decision that THIS was the year to ask him!
I sent Tony a text, and asked, “What would it take for you to come speak at my event?”
And he shot a text back that said, “I’d LOVE to!” And he directed me to his agent where I could start the process of getting everything set up.
And it was a major process!
We had to make sure the dates all worked…
And the location…
And the times…
And we coordinated what to talk about and focus on…
And the contract negotiations...
There was sooo much back and forth coordination - and then finally one day, a contract landed on my desk, and all I had to do was sign.
It was a surreal dream-come-true moment for me.
I signed the papers, and it was a done deal…
Tony Robbins was coming to my event.
It was really important to me that I got to be the one to introduce Tony Robbins when he came on stage.
I hired Devon Brown to be our emcee, so naturally he would have introduced Tony...
But I wanted to be able to share my story with my Funnel Hackers in the audience…
I wanted them to know how I met him, and the huge impact on my life that Tony has had. (He not only changed my life, but he saved my marriage…)
I hoped that, by having Tony at our event, I could give the FHL community a glimpse at this super-human that had changed the trajectory of my life in so many ways…
And then came the moment for Tony to take the stage…
It was HOURS of the craziest energy inside a room I had ever seen…
After he was finished, Tony came off stage, and I came back on for a minute to wrap up the event…
And it was a moment I’ll never forget…
Everyone was still riding the ‘energy-high’...
They were just so grateful to be able to spend an entire afternoon with Tony, that the entire crowd was ON THEIR FEET, chanting “Russell! Russell! Russell!...”
In that moment, it felt like such a crazy, surreal experience for me that had come full-circle.
Just a decade earlier, I was the young man in the audience at Tony’s event who had his life completely changed…
And now, years later, we were able to bring him on the stage at FHL, so he could do the same for so many entrepreneurs who were in that room.

Something special was happening among many of our Funnel Hackers that I wanted to celebrate…
There were tons of people crossing the MILLION-DOLLAR mark inside their funnels…
That’s such a huge milestone for an entrepreneur to hit, so I wanted each of them to have a special moment that they can take pictures of, and look back on and remember.
I wanted to recognize them in front of everyone during the FHL event.
So we created a very special award called the “Two Comma Club” award for entrepreneurs who reached the 7-figure financial milestone inside one of their funnels…
They each had a beautiful and emotional shining moment where they walked across the stage, and Todd Dickerson and I had the absolute honor of presenting ‘Two Comma Club’ plaques to 85 deserving entrepreneurs!
Since 2017, we’ve continued this tradition at FHL each year for the new entrepreneurs who cross the million-dollar mark with their funnel!
For so many reasons! First of all, we decided to have the event on at the Disney Coronado Springs Resort.
Not only was it able to house our 3,000+ attendees (which was more than DOUBLE the amount of event registrants from the year before!), but it made for a completely different location and environment than we were used to with previous venues.
Plus, with it being a Disney property, many attendees brought their families and added a few sight-seeing days to their trip on either side of the event. (And my family did the same!)
I wanted to choreograph this particular FHL event in a way that would help take any entrepreneur (no matter where they were at in their journey) to the next level in their business…
We had brand new entrepreneurs (some who didn’t even have a product of their own just yet) sitting next to multi-million dollar business owners…
So I knew that I had to carefully deliver messages during these 3 days that would deeply resonate with ALL phases of business owners, whether they were trying to scale from 0-$1M, $1M-$10M, or $10M-$100M…
For those who were trying to generate their first 7-figures, I put the focus on the “What” and the “How”... (meaning, WHAT are you selling, and HOW are you selling it?)
For the entrepreneurs aiming to scale their business to 8-figures, I shared 3 simple scaling strategies to help them reach that $10M mark…
And for those entrepreneurs who had already mastered those skills, and were shooting for the $100M milestone, I shared how to start scaling their business even further, without taking up more of their time…
2017 was such a hit with Tony Robbins as our FHL keynote speaker, I wanted to invite him back for a 2nd year!
And when the time came for Tony to speak, people were camped out waiting for the event doors to open so they could be the first inside to get the best seats!
Then the music started pumping…
And lights started echoing the beat...
Immediately, the energy (which was already high to begin with) shifted, and people were out of their seats…
And then you heard the iconic phrase bellowing through the entire venue...
Ever wondered what would feel like to see 3,000+ entrepreneurs ON THEIR FEETgoing crazy and soaking up every word?
It was a sensory overload of the most incredible kind… you could feel the base of the speakers pumping practically throughout your body, and you could actually FEEL the floor of the venue shake and move just a little from all the attendees jumping up and down.
We told everyone that the event would be over “whenever Tony was done”, and he spoke for several HOURS making sure that everyone was in a peak state of mind to create CHANGE, so they could go home and apply what they had learned to their business.
Many entrepreneurs were seeing SO much success, that it caused us to create something pretty cool in 2017...
In fact, 17 entrepreneurs passed the $10 Million mark inside of their ClickFunnels funnel...
And we thought that was something truly worth celebrating!
So we created a NEW award…
We called it the “Two Comma Club X” award...and we presented it to all the entrepreneurs who had reached the 8-figure milestone with one of their funnels!
Not only did our 17 recipients get to walk across the FHL stage and accept their giant award plaque, but we also surprised them with a superbowl-sized ring worth as a special thank you from ClickFunnels!
Towards the end of the event, we launched our ‘Two Comma Club X’ Coaching program for the first time…This opportunity was only open for a few days for people who attended FHL!
As I was presenting and announcing the brand new high-end coaching program, people started cheering and getting excited!
That’s when I knew we had created something that solves a major need among our community…
Before I had even finished my offer, people were flocking to the back of the roomto sign up for “2CCX” coaching. I still remember standing on stage delivering my pitch, while watching crowds of people get up out of their seat to go register for our coaching program!
In 2018, I wanted to introduce someone new to FHL…
Someone very special, and close to my heart...
I met Tim Ballard who headed up an organization called Operation Underground Railroad (O.U.R.), and he shared with me his mission to put an END to modern-day slavery, and save children from sex trafficking rings. After hearing story after story of how his team of operatives planned and carried out rescue missions all over the world to find and rescue children, I knew I wanted to help in whatever way I could…
ClickFunnels helped produce a documentary that shined a light on the issue of child trafficking, and the MILLIONS of children who are waiting to be rescued… I wanted as many people to know about this as possible…
I wanted them to care as much as I did, and to take a stand and join the fight against modern-day slavery with us…
So I decided to feature the documentary the first night of the FHL event...
After the funnel-hacking presentations were finished on the first day of the event, we invited everyone back for a private screening of the O.U.R film called “Operation Toussaint”.
The documentary followed Tim Ballard and his operative team into the darkest, most evil corners of Earth to seek out and arrest a Haitian trafficking ring, and rescue the children from an unimaginable life of sex-slavery.
Neither Tim nor I (or anyone in the audience) had seen the film LIVE yet…
So, to say that emotions ran HIGH as we all watched this documentary together was a major understatement. I don’t think there was a dry eye in the entire room…
But what touched me the most was how our Funnel Hackers responded… They joined the fight, and together as a room of entrepreneurs, we generated $1,013,772 for O.U.R. in just 72 hours!
We also presented a check to World Teacher Aid for the 4th year in a row! As a community, we built a total of $133,737 funnels inside ClickFunnels throughout the year…
...so we sent Stu and Amy McLaren home with $133,737 to continue with their school-building mission in Kenya!
